Navajo silversmith Melvin Francis comes from a long line of artists: his uncle Fred Francis is a silversmith, as well as his sisters Myrtle and Marlynn, and his mom Erma and sister Melvina are celebrated weavers. But it was from his father, Ted Francis, that he learned his craft.

Melvin is a contemporary jeweler known for his bold use of colorful stones. He does many kinds of silverwork including, overlay, and traditional stamp work.
